MZIN RESTOCK: SKULPTUR PROJEKTE MÜNSTER 2017 — KATALOG (SPECTOR BOOKS)

This summer, SLEEK celebrates Comme des Garcons and Rei Kawakubo’s extraordinary solo exhibition at the Met Costume Institute with a special 30-page dossier dedicated to the brand. Our cover story continues this tribute to CDG with “This is Not a Retrospective”, a fashion editorial featuring archival and current season pieces photographed by Till Janz and styled by Toby Grimditch and Kamilla Richter. Elsewhere in the issue, the worlds of fashion and art collide once more with a behind the scenes photo diary of Anne Imhof’s Golden Lion winning performance of “Faust” at the 2017 Venice Biennale.

MZIN NEWS: RYAN MCGINLEY — THE KIDS WERE ALRIGHT (RIZZOLI)
he first book to examine Ryan McGinley's early photographs and Polaroids--raw, visceral portraits of his coterie of friends and artists
in downtown New York City.
Published to accompany an exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Ryan McGinley: The Kids Were Alright focuses on the photographer's early work from 1998 to 2003, the year of his solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
These early photographs and Polaroids--many of which have never been exhibited or published-- document his friends and collaborators in downtown New York City. In the process, McGinley created a powerful portrait of his generation and their often debauched lifestyle: gritty, daring, and focused on moments of both pleasure and tedium. McGinley's singular ability to capture the mood and emotional depth of a moment is evident even from the earliest years of his career.
Curator Nora Burnett Abrams offers the most comprehensive consideration to date of this important work in her essay, and other contributions-- including an interview with McGinley and artist Dan Colen and several short reminiscences from many of his subjects and social circle at the time-- will provide context and commentary on the more than 100 works in the volume.--- EURO 35.00

***** Mies van der Rohe created - Influenced by Dada, Constructivism, and De Stijl - numerous montages and collages between 1910 and 1965 that are fascinating illustrations of the design principles of his architecture. These works, most of them large-format, are far more than merely sketches that accompanied his creative process as an architect. They are works of art in their own right that show Mies van der Rohe?s structural vision in its purest form. Abrupt changes of viewpoint, freedom from perspective, place and time, montage of found elements and an aesthetic focus on mixed media places him in the same historical context as artists and experimental filmmakers like i.e. Kurt Schwitters, Theo van Doesburg, Hans Richter, and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.

MZIN NEWS: MARK TERKESSIDIS — KOLLABORATIONEN (SUHRKAMP)

This book was published after Shannon Ebner's exhibition A Public Character, held at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Ebner's work is an extended mediation of language that often takes the form of photography. Certain aspects, especially seen in the ongoing series 'Black Box Collision A', represent her efforts to reflect upon our experience of language at the intersection of landscape and architecture, looking to the social world as a realistic, concrete location of poetics found and made; observed and constructed. Also included are the works A Hudson Yard, A Self, and A Singular, as well as the title work A Public Character. Essays by Alex Gartenfeld, Bruce Hainley, Laura Hoptman, Eileen Myles and Ellen Salpeter. Design: Julia Born.

Batia Suter's work intuitively situates found images in new contexts to provoke surprising reactions and significative possibilities. This volume follows on from the first Parallel Encyclopedia, published in 2007. Underlying themes of Suter's practice are the "iconification" and "immunogenicity" of old images, and the circumstances by which they become charged with new associative values. "In my work, I collect groups of images based on various themes and characteristics, and I investigate how they can manipulate each other, depending on where and how they are placed. In the process of making this book, narrative lines unfolded before my eyes as I shifted images around." Design: Roger Willems.

MZIN NEWS: SHOBO SHOBO (POPPER PUBLISHING)
Popper Magazine is the first Latvian illustration magazine, established on 2012 and made by enthusiastic artists, passionate about the visual form of illustration. If it’s said that picture or photograph can speak a 1000 words for itself, then we believe that an illustration can speak and reveal much more than that. Therefore, our goal is to communicate with people through visual language and also to make a contribution to the Latvian cultural life.
From 2014 our concept has changed a bit and now we are Popper Publishing. We are going to be a platform for books, artzines and other projects about illustration, graphic design, photography and fine art. Our main focus will still be on illustration with good old original Popper Magazine publishing.
Popper Publishing has published artists such as Shoboshobo, Ian Stevenson, Zosen, Ekta, 108, Moneyless, Tellas, Dem, Aleksandra Waliszewska, Laurent Impeduglia, Pakito Bolino, Tommi Musturi, Brecht Vandenbroucke, Raymond Lemstra, Malarky, Hell’O Monsters, Escif, Okuda San Miguel, Low Bros, Luke Ramsey, Gary Baseman, Ted Parker, Nick Mann, Elzo Durt, Stéphane Blanquet, Ohta Keiichi, Grimes & many more.

MZIN NEWS: JONAS MEKAS — I HAD NOWHERE TO GO (SPECTOR BOOKS)
Jonas Mekas has worked together with Andy Warhol, George Maciunas, John Lennon, and many others. In New York he was an influential figure in the New American Cinema, although he came to film-making relatively late. In 1944 Mekas and his younger brother Adolfas had to flee from the Nazis for copying leaflets. They were interned for eight months in a labour camp in Elmshorn. The Soviet occupation prevented him from returning to his native Lithuania after the war and, classed as a “displaced person”, he lived in DP camps in Wiesbaden and Kassel. Towards the end of 1949 he and his brother emigrated to New York. In his autobiography I Had Nowhere to Go he describes his survival in the camps and his arrival in New York. Mekas tells a universal story, that of an émigré who can never go back, whose loneliness in his new world is emblematic of human existence.

MZIN RESTOCK: VOLUME #50 — BEYOND ARCHITECTURE (NL)
When 'Volume' started as "magazine to go beyond architecture" in 2005, the world was a different one. There was a lot of attention for the spectacular in architecture, for instance, and little for where society was going in relation to architecture: the urgencies and opportunities architecture could and should engage with. Since, Volume explored a wide variety of topics and terrains, each time looking for the added value of architecture. So, what is the situation today? in this issue 'Volume' focuses on current dilemmas (young) architects are confronted with, both in education and in setting up their office. It’s less about ‘going beyond’ as such, and more about impact and repercussions.

MZIN NEWS: KARL-HEINZ ADLER — KUNST IM SYSTEM. SYSTEM IN DER KUNST. (SPECTOR BOOKS)
At the end of the 1950s Karl-Heinz Adler began to reinvent himself as an artist: he arranged fanned layerings of the same geometric elements, constructivist collages of interpenetrating rectangles, and laminations of transparent film, later followed by large-scale “serial linear forms”. His art was rejected in the GDR, even if it had a direct influence on the everyday life of many people in the new housing developments. In 1968, together with his artist colleague Friedrich Kracht, he had developed the “concrete/breeze block programme”, a construction kit of twelve basic modular forms that shortly afterwards went into production and from then on shaped the look of satellite towns. The book includes an interview conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist on the occasion of the artist’s ninetieth birthday. Exhibitions at the Albertinum in Dresden (April – June 2017) and at the Kassák Museum and Kiscelli Museum in Budapest (both May–August 2017).

MZIN NEWS: SPACE COLONIES — A GALACTIC FREEMAN´S JOURNAL (SPECTOR BOOKS)
At the beginning of the 1970s US American physicist Gerard K. O’Neill developed the first ideas for colonizing space. Shortly thereafter, Stewart Brand, cybercommunard and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, took up these ideas and published the book Space Colonies. In this and in other editions of the CoEvolution Quarterly, the issue of whether space might already be colonized in the year 2000 is discussed. Fabian Reimann’s Space Colonies. A Galactic Freeman’s Journal refers to these publications. In his photo essay he assembles historical, present-day, and speculative material, which he combines with fictional and factual stories to create a composite of different images of the world.

MZIN NEWS: ELEPHANT #31 — BEYOND GENDER (UK)
“If there was a clearly defined place for me to go, where I would be welcomed and at peace, I would surely have gone there many years ago.” Justin Vivian Bond is one of a growing number of artists who explore gender identity in non-binary terms.
In this issue, we look around the world to find the artists who are redefining gender for the twenty-first century and, in many cases, doing away with such definitions altogether. Chinese photographer Ren Hang, who tragically died in February, is central to our investigation as we trace his journey beyond gender to capture a world of giddy, boundary-defying freedom. “Genders can be attached and detached from the body. Like dildos, you can have many,” according to US artist A.L. Steiner. In Ghana we speak to Eric Gyamfi, whose work investigates universal concepts of gender but is strongly rooted in the local, while in Japan we meet Yoshiko Shimada, one of the first artists there to use the f-word—feminism.
In our Journal section, Maki Hakui investigate the cultural phenomenon of “Boys’ Love” manga in Japan while Andrew Spyrou reveals the art of Athens when Documenta isn’t in town. Columnists Mel Byars discusses psychedelic design and Ben Eastham hails the return of the art object.
There’s also a Paper Gallery dedicated to the lucid illustrative dreaming of Klaus Kremmerz, in addition to Encounters with Jose Dávila, Marcel Dzama, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Kahlil Joseph, Santiago Sierra and Fabienne Verdier.

The title is appropriate: the black and white illustrations portray twenty-six elegant young men with giant phalli protruding from their backs, breaking out of their hats or placed delicately around their shoulders like animals after the hunt. A cheeky text in rhyme by Glenn O’Brien entitled ‘Dickheads’ introduces the drawings.
