Birgit ist eine langjährige Verwaltungsangestellte, die ihre Arbeit und die Abläufe im Büro genau kennt. An diesem Morgen stellt sich ihre neue Vorgesetzte vor und verteilt Aufgaben. Birgit weiß, dass sie ihrer neuen Vorgesetzten überlegen ist und deren Aufträge mit links erledigen könnte. Doch stattdessen sitzt sie untätig vor dem Bildschirmschoner und wartet ab. Irgendwann packt Birgit einen Karton mit ihren Habseligkeiten und verlässt das Büro.

“Birgit” ist die grafische Momentaufnahme einer Figur, die unvermittelt, dabei aber behutsam aus ihrem bisherigen Alltag aussteigt. Wie in seinem Vorgängercomic “Röhner” (Rotopolpress) beweist Max Baitinger einen äußerst humorvollen Umgang mit überraschenden zeichnerischen Mitteln.

At the beginning of the 1970s US American physicist Gerard K. O’Neill developed the first ideas for colonizing space. Shortly thereafter, Stewart Brand, cybercommunard and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, took up these ideas and published the book Space Colonies. In this and in other editions of the CoEvolution Quarterly, the issue of whether space might already be colonized in the year 2000 is discussed. Fabian Reimann’s Space Colonies. A Galactic Freeman’s Journal refers to these publications. In his photo essay he assembles historical, present-day, and speculative material, which he combines with fictional and factual stories to create a composite of different images of the world.

Drawn between 1967 and 1974, the fifteen stories here follow Sasaki’s groundbreaking exploration of collage methods in comics storytelling, weaving through references to R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, the Vietnam War, Andy Warhol, the Summer of Love, the Beatles, British humour, and the wacky world of Japanese consumerism. Ding Dong Circus demonstrates what manga fans already knew: that in Sasaki Maki, Japan can claim not only a pioneer in experimental comics, but one of the world’s masters of Pop Art and a trenchant avant-garde critic of the Sixties.

The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and selfpublished works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«. This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

Debut short-form comics publication by Dutch illustrator Viktor Hachmang. Book of Void deals with the romantic notion of destroying precious artworks and aims to explore its inherent logic – what is it like to live in a world ruled by fear in which a static work of art can become a harmful incomprehensible “Thing” that must be destroyed?

Book of Void is a fictionalized account of two subsequent slashings of monumental minimal artworks at the Stedelijk Museum and takes cues from The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi’s classic handbook of samurai swordsmanship and philosophy. Book of Void poses the question if such acts of violence are truly pointless, or do they possess an innate spiritual beauty?

Der französische Grafiker Jean Jullien stammt ursprünglich aus Nantes und lebt heute in London, wo er zwei Hochschulabschlüsse erwarb: 2008 am Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design und 2010 am Royal College of Art. Sein künstlerisches Interesse reicht von Illustrationen und Fotografien über Videos, Kostüme und Installationen bis hin zu Büchern, Plakaten und Kleidung, die er zu einem einheitlichen, aber vielseitigen Gesamtwerk verbindet.  

Als persönliche Antwort auf die Pariser Terroranschläge vom November 2015 schuf Jean Jullien die Zeichnung „Peace for Paris“, die in den sozialen Netzwerken millionenfach geteilt wurde und um die Welt ging. Seine schlichte, in das Peace-Zeichen integrierte Silhouette des Eiffelturms ist zum Symbol für Solidarität und Trost geworden.

MZIN NEWS: WESLEY WILLIS — TRUCKS (NIEVES)

For two decades until his death in 2003, keyboard rock star Wesley Willis (*1963) rendered Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and geometric skyline with ballpoint pen and felt-tip-marker lines. Known primarily to an alternative public for the uniquely singular sounds from his Technics KN 2000 and surreal texts which explored the themes of daily life such as fast food, bus lines, cultural trends or violent confrontations with super heroes, Wesley Willis's drawings testify to the years he spent sitting in on drawing classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology, manifest in drafting techniques Willis never abandoned but, to singular effect, refused to master. A series of small untitled drawings in blue ink from the early 80s depict big rigs, tractor trailers, rolling stock, and transit-authority buses in side and isometric views. His sketches, often in color, explore almost obsessively the congested freeway which connects Chicago’s South Side with the city’s downtown – a metaphor for his wish to bridge the two worlds.

At age of 28, Willis began to hear voices. He called then his "demons." According to him writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Wesley Willis died on August 21, 2003 at age 40 in Skokie, Illinois. Delmes & Zander Cologne in Cologne first showed the work of Wesley Willis in Germany in 2013 and has represented the artist ever since.
