Neubau Forst Catalogue is the 432-page print catalogue of a digital collection of tree silhouettes and sculptures seen at different seasons. Working by hand, the Neubau designers digitally removed the trees from their original Berlin surroundings and thereby crafted a body of visual material whose scope, outstanding quality of detail and excellent image resolution sets it clearly apart from conventional tree libraries compiled with autotracing tools. The trees, which were systematically photographed in summer and winter over several years, assume a timeless validity through Neubau’s process of selection and are thus universally applicable for future visualizations.


From the existing stand-alone tree objects, which can be placed against both dark and light backgrounds of all kinds, Neubau has furthermore derived individual “tree modules”. These modules can be combined with the ready-to-use trees in an endless number of ways. At the end of the 1950s Karl-Heinz Adler began to reinvent himself as an artist: he arranged fanned layerings of the same geometric elements, constructivist collages of interpenetrating rectangles, and laminations of transparent film, later followed by large-scale “serial linear forms”. His art was rejected in the GDR, even if it had a direct influence on the everyday life of many people in the new housing developments. In 1968, together with his artist colleague Friedrich Kracht, he had developed the “concrete/breeze block programme”, a construction kit of twelve basic modular forms that shortly afterwards went into production and from then on shaped the look of satellite towns. The book includes an interview conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist on the occasion of the artist’s ninetieth birthday. Exhibitions at the Albertinum in Dresden (April – June 2017) and at the Kassák Museum and Kiscelli Museum in Budapest (both May–August 2017).

in the 1950s, frei otto’s tent structures left their mark on the horticultural shows of the new bonn republic; together with behnisch & partner he created the roof landscape for the munich olympic games in 1972. the innovative potential in his work is based on the interdisciplinarity of a mode of thinking that took in architecture, technology, art, science, and society. he saw nature as a model and tried throughout his life to harness it for the sake of architecture and civil engineering — and thus also for the future. the frei-otto archive features a large number of experimental models. the book will come out in two editions (german and english) and will be the first time frei otto’s models have appeared in print. the book is being published in conjunction with the most extensive exhibition to date of the work of frei otto at the zkm | center for art and media karlsruhe in association with the wüstenrot foundation. the exhibition will open in autumn 2016.

This book is the first to document the remarkable history of the International Institute of Design (IID), an independent school of architecture founded and directed by Alvin Boyarsky from 1970 – 72, and highlights a pivotal episode in the career of Boyarsky, best known for his subsequent role as chairman of the Architectural Association (1971 – 90). Launched in the wake of the institutional upheavals that had swept schools of architecture during the late 1960s, the IID introduced an alternative model of architectural instruction: one that brought together a range of teaching methods, design strategies, theories and projects alongside an international assortment of protagonists. In Progress details this short-lived experiment through a trove of previously unpublished material, and reveals how three informal architectural gatherings, held over three successive summers, can be seen to have established not only a network of architects and discourses, but a new model for architectural education.
