MZIN NEWS: WORKSHOP OF THE FILM FORM (STERNBERG PRESS)

Workshop of the Film Form provides an in-depth overview of the achievements of Warsztat Formy Filmowej (WWF; Workshop of the Film Form), a group of avant-garde artists who were working at the Leon Schiller National Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre in Lodz, Poland, between 1970 and 1977. WWF was founded by the students and graduates of the school, now known as the National Film School, and included: Wojciech Bruszewski, Paweł Kwiek, Andrzej Różycki, Józef Robakowski, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Kazimierz Bendkowski, Antoni Mikołajczyk, Janusz Połom, and Ryszard Waśko. As pioneers of video art in Poland and structural cinema in Central and Eastern Europe, the artists refused classical narrative and traditional film media, working instead somewhere between cinematography and contemporary art.

This publication examines all aspects of WFF’s activity, from their films, photographic experiments, video art, and performative actions to their teaching work, which includes previously unexplored pedagogical contributions to the National Film School. Drawing on the private archives and oral testimonies of the WWF, Workshop of the Film Form attempts to provide a full account of the group’s history as well as a comprehensive survey of each member’s practice. The writers who were invited to respond to the WWF for this book provide insightful new readings of the group’s output and activities, contextualizing their work in the history of the prewar Polish avant-garde and the politics of experimental filmmaking in Poland under the rule of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR).

MZIN NEWS: JONAS MEKAS — I HAD NOWHERE TO GO (SPECTOR BOOKS)

Jonas Mekas has worked together with Andy Warhol, George Maciunas, John Lennon, and many others. In New York he was an influential figure in the New American Cinema, although he came to film-making relatively late. In 1944 Mekas and his younger brother Adolfas had to flee from the Nazis for copying leaflets. They were interned for eight months in a labour camp in Elmshorn. The Soviet occupation prevented him from returning to his native Lithuania after the war and, classed as a “displaced person”, he lived in DP camps in Wiesbaden and Kassel. Towards the end of 1949 he and his brother emigrated to New York. In his autobiography I Had Nowhere to Go he describes his survival in the camps and his arrival in New York. Mekas tells a universal story, that of an émigré who can never go back, whose loneliness in his new world is emblematic of human existence.

Published as part of ‘Motion’, an exhibition by Dutch artist and graphic designer Karel Martens at Kunstverein München, this book is the seventh instalment of the ‘Companion’ series produced by the Kunstverein and Roma Publications. With concept and design by Julie Peeters, the greater part of the book’s content is derived from the video ‘Not for Resale’, a sequence of photographs of the array of images and objects found on the artist’s studio wall, taken in 2000. Material from two other videos, ‘Lost & Found’ (2004) and ‘Tol’ (2008), is also included, along with a transcription of a conversation between Martens and Chris Fitzpatrick, director of the Kunstverein.

«Literature is the art of building memories and an identity from the otherness.»

This artist book is based on a quotation system to classify Farenheit 451’s burned books from three different perspectives : the original story by Ray Bradbury, the film adaptation by François Truffaut and a personal selection of books. 

Each title was searched on the facebook book groups and linked to their followers (likes). A photo of one of these has been chosen to represent each burned book and has been placed, through the page number, with the first sentence of its original story. The content in the book is from openly available sources on the internet but questions authoship rights of the images and their accessibility and use.

MZIN NEWS: MARIO PFEIFER — APPROXIMATION IN THE DIGITAL AGE ... (STERNBERG PRESS)

Mario Pfeifer developed his latest project, Approximation in the digital age for a humanity condemned to disappear, in Puerto Williams, the southernmost settlement in the world on the Chilean archipelagos of Patagonia bordering Argentina. The publication, designed by Markus Weisbeck equally as an artist’s book and research compendium, engages—through essays, annotated texts, and a conversation between Thomas Seelig and Mario Pfeifer—discourses of cultural production from an anthropological-artistic approach about indigenous representation, territorial politics in the postcolonial age, and the traces of German missionary and anthropologist Martin Gusinde in Chile and beyond. Included is Hugo Palmarola’s essay, “Folding Culture,” the first in-depth investigation published on the Yagán—a jeep built in cooperation with Citroën in the 1970s—as a socioeconomic and political symbol of Chile’s turbulent coup d’état and relationship to its indigenous population in the far south. 

This publication documents Mario Pfeifer’s multiple-screen video installation and production process as well as his archival research at the Martin Gusinde Estate at the Anthropos Institut in Sankt Augustin and in the ethnomusicology department of the Museum of Ethnography in Berlin. A special edition LP was released with the bilingual publication on the occasion of Pfeifer’s first institutional solo exhibition in Latin America and further presentations in Belo Horizonte, Berlin, Brussels, Concepción, Newcastle, New York, Seoul, Santiago de Chile, and Winterthur.

„Scrapbook of the Sixties“ versammelt veröffentlichte und unveröffentlichte Texte von Jonas Mekas, dem Filmemacher, Autor, Poet und Mitbegründer des Anthology Film Archives in New York. Mekas wurde 1922 in Litauen geboren und kam 1949 über Deutschland nach Brooklyn. Dort begann er, seine ersten Filme zu drehen. Mekas entwickelte eine Form des Tagebuchfilms, in dem er seine alltäglichen Beobachtungen festhielt. Er wurde zum Seismographen der New Yorker Künstlerszene und Vordenker des amerikanischen Avantgarde-Kinos. Ab 1958 veröffentlichte er wöchentlich in der Village Voice seine legendäre Kolumne „Movie Journal“, in der er nicht nur über Filme schrieb. Er führte zahlreiche Gespräche mit Künstlern wie Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag, John Lennon und Yoko Ono, Erick Hawkins sowie Nam June Paik. Einige der Texte erscheinen nun zum ersten Mal in seinem „Scrapbook of the Sixties“, in dem er als aufmerksamer Tagebuchschreiber und einzigartiger Chronist der Gegenwart auftritt: und das mittlerweile seit über 50 Jahren.

Jonas Mekas (*1922, Semeniškiai / Lithuania), lives and works in New York. Film-maker, writer, poet and co-founder of the Anthology Film Archives one of the world’s largest and most important repositories of avant-garde film. Mekas’s work has been exhibited in museums and festivals worldwide.

Shit and Die is an editorial project by Maurizio Cattelan, Myriam Ben Salah and Marta Papini, published as part of the homonymous exhibition in Torino (November 6th 2014 – January 11th 2015). The publication is not a mere comment on the exhibition, it could be seen as an extension of it, a missing room. As the show, it is conceived as the most subjective, obsessive, and irrationally non exhaustive composition. Several local stories, unpublished archival material, exclusive contributions by artists and theorists incorporate into a consistent and unique narration through seven deadly chapters that readers can comprehend as a whole tale.
