Popper Magazine is the first Latvian illustration magazine, established on 2012 and made by enthusiastic artists, passionate about the visual form of illustration. If it’s said that picture or photograph can speak a 1000 words for itself, then we believe that an illustration can speak and reveal much more than that. Therefore, our goal is to communicate with people through visual language and also to make a contribution to the Latvian cultural life.

From 2014 our concept has changed a bit and now we are Popper Publishing. We are going to be a platform for books, artzines and other projects about illustration, graphic design, photography and fine art. Our main focus will still be on illustration with good old original Popper Magazine publishing.

We are delighted to announce the release of KALEIDOSCOPE’s new issue #29 (spring 2017), premiering in New York during Armory Week.

This issue comes with a set of three collectable covers dedicated to our MAIN THEME survey, Dancing After All, exploring the riveting relationship between dance and contemporary art. This themed survey offers a fresh and in-depth perspective on the revolutionary possibilities of the body in movement, analyzing its aesthetic power, political charge and social impact—from the stage to the club, from the street to the gallery. The section is comprised of three interviews with cover artists Anne Imhof (by Susanne Pfeffer), Ligia Lewis (by Martha Kirszenbaum) and Alex Baczynski-Jenkins (by Kathy Noble); an essay by Francesca Gavin on dance in pop culture; case studies on British creative force FKA Twigs and American dance pioneer Merce Cunningham; a round table with performers/choreographers Maria Hassabi, Will Rawls and Cally Spooner moderated by Charles Aubin; and a visual insert by artist Cécile B. To follow, this issue's MONO section is dedicated to New York painter Peter Halley. MZIN NEWS: MIRABEL MAS — INTERFERENZEN, ZEICHNUNGEN UND GRAFIK (MMKOEHN)

In den Zeichnungen und Grafiken von Maribel Mas treten die Interferenzen zufällig auf, an den Berührungspunkten der Linien. Unter Verwendung von Schablonen aus Papier kann die Künsterin straffe Linien ziehen, die dann wie die Saiten eines Musikinstrumentes in Schwingung versetzt werden können. Tatsächlich haben die Wiederholungsmuster serieller Musik einen bemerkenswerten Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit, besonders die minimalistischen Kompositionen von Steve Reich und das Streben nach einer „phase music“, in der identische Klangphasen aufeinander gelegt werden mit minimalen Umstellungen. Mit einem ähnlichen Ansatz spielt die Künstlerin mit der Möglichkeit einer „phase drawing“. Dafür verwendet sie nur die einfachsten Materialien: Papier und Tusche.


Das Papier, mehr als eine tragende Oberfläche, wird zum aktiven Element. Den einzigartigen Charakter eines nicht industriellen, nicht standarisierten Materials zu verstehen und entdecken war ein langsamer Prozess, ermöglicht durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Handwerksmeistern in Japan, die die verschiedenen von ihr verwendeten Papiersorten aus Ganpi-, Mitsumata- und Kouzofasern herstellen.


In ihrer Barcelonaer Werkstatt und der Leipziger Spinnerei hat Maribel Mas an diversen Grafikprojekten mitgewirkt, in denen sie neue Möglichkeiten der Linie entdecken konnte. Ausgehend von diesen Erfahrungen mit Lithografie, Cliché verre und Photopolymer konzentriert sie ihr Werk auf sich wiederholenden Linien als konstruktives Element. Die Interferenzen, die auf natürliche Weise in einem Arbeitsverfahren ohne vorherige Skizzen entstehen, laden zum Nachdenken ein: über die Vielfältigkeit und Unbeständigkeit der Dinge – oder aber sie eröffnen einen Spielraum, in dem der Blick mit den Linien frei spielen kann.


Die Zeichnerin und Lithografin Maribel Mas ist 1967 in Caracas geboren. Im Jahr 2000 ließ sie sich in Barcelona nieder, wo sie sich auf Lithografie spezialisierte und 2005 die Druckwerkstatt „Taller Esquina“ gründete. Heute arbeitet sie gemeinsam mit Museen und Kunsthochschulen an verschiedenen grafischen Projekten. Ihre Werke sind bereits in vielen Städten ausgestellt worden – Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Osaka und Leipzig, wo sie seit 2015 lebt.

Since 1998, Ingo Giezendanner, alias GRRRR, has been documenting the urban spaces in which he has travelled and lived. Apart from his native city of Zurich, his travels have taken him to diverse cities from New York and New Orleans to Cairo, Nairobi, Karachi and Colombo. Everywhere he travels, he captures his surroundings on location with pen on paper. His drawings have been presented in numerous magazines, books and animated films as well as in spacious installations and wallpaintings.

MZIN NEWS: JUDITH BERNSTEIN — DICKS OF DEATH (EDITION PATRICK FREY)

Mehr als fünfzig Jahre lang war meine stärkste und intensivste Beziehung die zu meiner Arbeit. Nach dem Bachelor begann ich in den Sechzigern als Studentin an der Yale University, den Phallus als Metapher für Feminismus und männliches Imponiergehabe zu verwenden. An der Yale-Uni gab es zu dieser Zeit im Grundstudium nur Männer. Mit der Zeit begeisterte ich mich für die drastischen Graffiti, die ich in den Männertoiletten entdeckte; der derbe Humor und das lose hingeworfene Gekritzel inspirierten mich. Aggression und Humor sind in meiner Arbeit eng verbunden. Sehr deutlich wird das in «Supercock» (1966), der Zeichnung eines Comichelden mit riesigen Genitalien, der sich durch die Welt ejakuliert; oder auch in «Fun-Gun» (1967), der anatomischen Zeichnung eines Phallus, der eine Collage lebendiger Munition abschiesst. Meine «Fuck Vietnam»-Serie war erst der Anfang. Graffiti-Elemente und -Stilmittel ziehen sich durch meine gesamte Arbeit. Sie äussern sich auch in skatologischen Werktiteln wie «Dicks of Death» (2015). Ich begegne dem Krieg mit sehr eindringlichen Worten und Bildern, die einen vor den Kopf stossen. Ausgestopfte Phalli, Blut und Sperma gleich neben Bildern der Nation und der Flagge der Vereinigten Staaten: Das ist lustig – aber eben auch todernst!

Holzkohle ist mein liebstes Medium. Über meine gesamte künstlerische Laufbahn habe ich das Arbeiten mit Holzkohle als äusserst dynamisch, roh und persönlich erlebt. Es verleiht diesen politischen Zeichnungen etwas Kerniges und lässt sie aus dem Bauch heraus kommen. Die Holzkohlearbeiten stehen für eine Verschmelzung von Antikriegskunst, Feminismus und Sexualität.

Jenseits dieser Themen vertieft sich meine Arbeit in die vielen Schichten der menschlichen Psyche. Meine Kunst konfrontiert die Betrachterin, den Betrachter mit den Nöten und der Verworrenheit menschlicher Beziehungen – mit dem ewigen Zwist, der aus ihnen entsteht, und den Spannungen, die seit unseren Ursprüngen bis zum heutigen Tag darin mitschwingen. Nathalie Du Pasquier was one of the founding members of Memphis, the groundbreaking Milanese design and architecture collective. During her time with the group she designed patterns for textiles and carpets as well as objects and furniture. Since 1987, however, her main focus and passion has been painting. The title of this publication describes the main focus of her work: the still life. Her distinct influences are visible here: travels to Africa, the ornamentation of the Wiener Werkstätte, the art of Le Corbusier and Amédée Ozenfant, and Novecento painting by Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi.

This publication consists of an artist’s book by Du Pasquier with drawings, photographs, and reproductions of her paintings, and a book with photographs by Delfino Sisto Legnani of works from the past decades. Texts by writers and artists and an interview with Du Pasquier provide an informative and subjective view of her artistic practice.

Le 8e numéro de la revue d'art et de recherche « rétro-prospective » décline les initiales de Nathalie du Pasquier, membre fondatrice de l'iconoclaste groupe Memphis, ayant travaillé comme designer jusqu'en 1986, réalisant de nombreuses « surfaces décorées » (textiles, tapis, objets en plastique stratifié, mobilier divers), se consacrant depuis lors presque exclusivement à la peinture, et dont l'œuvre a été « redécouverte », notamment dans le champ de la mode, depuis les années 2000.

Deux fois par ans, Initiales, revue produite et éditée par l'Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (ENSBA) de Lyon, esquisse les contours d'une galerie de « portraits en creux » en s'organisant autour de « figures-source », existantes ou fictives. Des figures d'artistes, philosophes, écrivains, architectes ou cinéastes dont le dénominateur commun est qu'elles ont « fait école » dans leur discipline et au-delà, dans les champs qu'elles ont investis ou traversés. L'œuvre, la pensée mais plus encore les méthodes déployées, les pistes explorées (et parfois avortées) ou les réseaux créés par cette figure de référence servent de sous-texte ou de script à chacune des livraisons.
Réunissant, à partir d'une même figure, une série de contributions centrifuges, Initiales met ainsi en jeu un usage de la source et une expérience du temps qui ne sont ni ceux de l'historien ni ceux du scientifique, mais qui sont à l'œuvre dans le travail de l'art et qui sont au cœur de la réflexion menée depuis 2004 par le groupe de recherche ACTH (Art contemporain et temps de l'histoire) de l'ENSBA Lyon.
Revue de recherche et de création, Initiales fait le pari qu'une école d'art est aujourd'hui l'un des lieux les plus aptes à produire et organiser des formes et des pensées nouvelles, susceptibles de venir nourrir le débat et élargir le champ de l'art et de la pensée. A cet égard, c'est une revue d'école, mais dans l'exacte mesure où l'école est un lieu de passage, de rencontre et de collaboration avec de multiples acteurs qui lui sont aussi extérieurs. Initiales rejoue ainsi en son sein l'hospitalité essentielle et féconde des écoles d'art et s'adresse aussi bien au champ de l'art contemporain et de la création d'aujourd'hui qu'au monde de l'enseignement et de la recherche – et plus largement à toute personne curieuse des opérations à l'œuvre dans la création, la pensée et la culture.

Designer, sculpteur et peintre, Nathalie du Pasquier (née à Bordeaux en 1957) fut l'une des femmes du groupe Memphis qui, au début des années 1980, su faire bouger, autour d'Ettore Sottssas, les lignes du bon goût et les frontières de la société de consommation. Installée depuis à Milan depuis 1979, Nathalie du Pasquier a par la suite repris une intense pratique d'atelier et entretenu des rapports de bon voisinage avec ces objets du quotidien qui ont fait sa fortune pendant l'ère Memphis, et bien après, dans ses toiles aux compositions minimales ou ses modules géométriques. Cette capacité à circuler entre les formes et les pratiques, jusqu'à la « redécouverte » récente de son travail dans le champ de la mode qui a fait appel à ses services au milieu des années 2000 pour redessiner des motifs post-Memphis, est sans doute ce qui caractérise le mieux cette artiste atypique née en 1957. Et explique sans doute pourquoi son travail, jusqu'à récemment encore, semblait voué à une certaine marginalité.
