Die Geschichte des deutschen Plakats nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg beginnt mit den Filmplakaten von Hans Hillmann. Seine Plakate werben nicht nur, sie kommentieren die jeweiligen Filme. Sie sind das Ergebnis einer eingehenden Beschäftigung mit den Charakteren, der Handlung, mit dem Kern und den besonderen Qualitäten eines Films. Hillmann kamen dabei seine außerordentlichen zeichnerischen Fähigkeiten zugute, aber er arbeitete auch mit Fotomontage, um das Filmthema im Plakat fortzusetzen. Diesem Anspruch widmete er sich völlig unabhängig vom Zeitgeschmack, indem er Flächen auf neue Weise strukturierte, Gestaltungs- und Freifläche komponierte und die Typografie als Teil des Bildes verstand.

Kurt Weidemann, geb.1922, ist einer der führenden Grafikdesigner, Berater, Gestalter von Unternehmensbildern. MZIN NEWS: DRESSED IN BLACK — SPECTRUM AND LOTHAR REHER (PRECINCT)

Dressed in Black extends out of the exhibition A Shelf for Lothar, staged in 2016 at the 27th Brno Biennial of Graphic Design. The book reproduces 115 jackets from the Spektrum series, the work of German designer and artist Lothar Reher. 

Spektrum, published in East Berlin by Volk und Welt from 1968 to 1993, embodied the ideals of accessibility and inclusiveness epitomised by the wave of mid-twentieth century paperbacks, in their inherent simplicity and usability. And yet, despite its mass readership, the series’ dense monochrome imagery has an uneasy air of mystery, with often oblique relationship to the books’ contents.

Reher designed all but one of the series’ 279 titles, producing the photographic montages more or less single handedly. Recurring motifs such as skulls, faces, museological artefacts and spherical objects reveal a long-term visual grammar, with later books in the series often echoing back to earlier designs. These taxonomies formed the basis of the shelf display in Brno, and aim to gain insight into Reher’s distinctive interpretation of this considerable body of literature. 

Alongside actual size reproductions of the jackets, Dressed in Black features essays by Regine Ehleiter and Roland Früh which further elaborate on the transactions between book and exhibition formats.

MZIN NEWS: NEUBAU — FORST CATALOGUE (LARS MÜLLER)

Neubau Forst Catalogue is the 432-page print catalogue of a digital collection of tree silhouettes and sculptures seen at different seasons. Working by hand, the Neubau designers digitally removed the trees from their original Berlin surroundings and thereby crafted a body of visual material whose scope, outstanding quality of detail and excellent image resolution sets it clearly apart from conventional tree libraries compiled with autotracing tools. The trees, which were systematically photographed in summer and winter over several years, assume a timeless validity through Neubau’s process of selection and are thus universally applicable for future visualizations.


From the existing stand-alone tree objects, which can be placed against both dark and light backgrounds of all kinds, Neubau has furthermore derived individual “tree modules”. These modules can be combined with the ready-to-use trees in an endless number of ways. Alongside detailed information about tree species, size, location, year of planting and file format, the catalogue contains also numerous

Gestalt is an overview of the diverse artistic practice of Fos, who’s works explore how the language of objects and space define us as social beings. The book sits somewhere between a monograph and an artist book, with 12 years of works collected into an organic flow which document but also re-interpret and re-contextualise the objects and spaces which accumulate to form his practice. The book is made up of an indexed flow of works punctuated by a series of commissioned texts from curators, scientists and theorists. It includes numerous foldout pages and employs an eclectic range of papers and print finishes. Gestalt was made from early-2016 to mid-2017 between London and Copenhagen and is the result of a close collaboration between the artist and OK-RM.

This book was published after Shannon Ebner's exhibition A Public Character, held at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Ebner's work is an extended mediation of language that often takes the form of photography. At the beginning of the 1970s US American physicist Gerard K. O’Neill developed the first ideas for colonizing space. Shortly thereafter, Stewart Brand, cybercommunard and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, took up these ideas and published the book Space Colonies. In this and in other editions of the CoEvolution Quarterly, the issue of whether space might already be colonized in the year 2000 is discussed. Fabian Reimann’s Space Colonies. A Galactic Freeman’s Journal refers to these publications. In his photo essay he assembles historical, present-day, and speculative material, which he combines with fictional and factual stories to create a composite of different images of the world.

The title is appropriate: the black and white illustrations portray twenty-six elegant young men with giant phalli protruding from their backs, breaking out of their hats or placed delicately around their shoulders like animals after the hunt. A cheeky text in rhyme by Glenn O’Brien entitled ‘Dickheads’ introduces the drawings.

MZIN NEWS: MIRABEL MAS — INTERFERENZEN, ZEICHNUNGEN UND GRAFIK (MMKOEHN)

In den Zeichnungen und Grafiken von Maribel Mas treten die Interferenzen zufällig auf, an den Berührungspunkten der Linien. Unter Verwendung von Schablonen aus Papier kann die Künsterin straffe Linien ziehen, die dann wie die Saiten eines Musikinstrumentes in Schwingung versetzt werden können. Tatsächlich haben die Wiederholungsmuster serieller Musik einen bemerkenswerten Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit, besonders die minimalistischen Kompositionen von Steve Reich und das Streben nach einer „phase music“, in der identische Klangphasen aufeinander gelegt werden mit minimalen Umstellungen. Mit einem ähnlichen Ansatz spielt die Künstlerin mit der Möglichkeit einer „phase drawing“. Dafür verwendet sie nur die einfachsten Materialien: Papier und Tusche.


Das Papier, mehr als eine tragende Oberfläche, wird zum aktiven Element. Den einzigartigen Charakter eines nicht industriellen, nicht standarisierten Materials zu verstehen und entdecken war ein langsamer Prozess, ermöglicht durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Handwerksmeistern in Japan, die die verschiedenen von ihr verwendeten Papiersorten aus Ganpi-, Mitsumata- und Kouzofasern herstellen.


In ihrer Barcelonaer Werkstatt und der Leipziger Spinnerei hat Maribel Mas an diversen Grafikprojekten mitgewirkt, in denen sie neue Möglichkeiten der Linie entdecken konnte. Ausgehend von diesen Erfahrungen mit Lithografie, Cliché verre und Photopolymer konzentriert sie ihr Werk auf sich wiederholenden Linien als konstruktives Element. Die Interferenzen, die auf natürliche Weise in einem Arbeitsverfahren ohne vorherige Skizzen entstehen, laden zum Nachdenken ein: über die Vielfältigkeit und Unbeständigkeit der Dinge – oder aber sie eröffnen einen Spielraum, in dem der Blick mit den Linien frei spielen kann.


Die Zeichnerin und Lithografin Maribel Mas ist 1967 in Caracas geboren. Im Jahr 2000 ließ sie sich in Barcelona nieder, wo sie sich auf Lithografie spezialisierte und 2005 die Druckwerkstatt „Taller Esquina“ gründete. Heute arbeitet sie gemeinsam mit Museen und Kunsthochschulen an verschiedenen grafischen Projekten. Ihre Werke sind bereits in vielen Städten ausgestellt worden – Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Osaka und Leipzig, wo sie seit 2015 lebt.

MZIN RESTOCK: MUITA ANIMACAO — POSTERS FROM THE NOEL FISHER COLLECTION (ROLLO PRESS)

Muita Animação showcases a selection of Portuguese party posters that are very prominent in the local landscape because of their bold design as well as their unique production method: Printed on plastic and mounted on streetposts and trees, they mostly survive the date they announce and therefore can even be seen on Google Streetview. Zurich Artist Noël Fischer started to collect these posters a few years back and has now — together with design studio Hammer — published them in this whimsical A3-sized book. This collection might as well be Jan Tschichold’s worst nightmare.
