Die Geschichte des deutschen Plakats nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg beginnt mit den Filmplakaten von Hans Hillmann. Seine Plakate werben nicht nur, sie kommentieren die jeweiligen Filme. Sie sind das Ergebnis einer eingehenden Beschäftigung mit den Charakteren, der Handlung, mit dem Kern und den besonderen Qualitäten eines Films. Hillmann kamen dabei seine außerordentlichen zeichnerischen Fähigkeiten zugute, aber er arbeitete auch mit Fotomontage, um das Filmthema im Plakat fortzusetzen. Diesem Anspruch widmete er sich völlig unabhängig vom Zeitgeschmack, indem er Flächen auf neue Weise strukturierte, Gestaltungs- und Freifläche komponierte und die Typografie als Teil des Bildes verstand.

Autoren, Künstler und Journalisten können über das Thema, die Länge und die Form ihres Beitrags selbst entscheiden. Dadurch ergibt sich eine wilde Mischung aus Essays, Reportagen, Gedichten, Fotografien und Kunst. Rezensionen, die hauptsächlich zur Positionierung des Magazins dienen, und katalogähnliche „Lifestyle“- Seiten überlassen wir getrost anderen Blättern.

Wir sind der Meinung, unserer Leserschaft diesen fröhlichen Eklektizismus durchaus zumuten zu können– die mediale Überforderung durch fehlende Strukturen wie Sparten oder Kolumnen ist im Internetzeitalter nur mehr eine schwache Erinnerung. Kaari Upson beschäftigt sich in ihrer Praxis mit Fragen der Kontaminierung; sie richtet ihr Augenmerk auf den Raum zwischen dem eigenen Selbst und dem Anderen: die unbestimmte Zone, die "uns beide" einbezieht. Sie konzentriert sich auf das häusliche Umfeld und präsentiert uns mit einer Fülle emotionaler Materie, wie sie ein vertrautes Objekt oder familiäre Milieus enthalten können; wir verbreiten uns ständig über all das, was zu uns gehört. Im Gegenzug verströmen unsere Dinge ihre Dinghaftigkeit über uns. In the publication Upson presents a log-book that follows the process and ephemera of the Pepsi can's production, layered and juxtaposed with the manuscript of Upson's mother's autobiography, which describes her life in East Germany and her journey to the United States.

Workshop of the Film Form provides an in-depth overview of the achievements of Warsztat Formy Filmowej (WWF; Workshop of the Film Form), a group of avant-garde artists who were working at the Leon Schiller National Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre in Lodz, Poland, between 1970 and 1977. WWF was founded by the students and graduates of the school, now known as the National Film School, and included: Wojciech Bruszewski, Paweł Kwiek, Andrzej Różycki, Józef Robakowski, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Kazimierz Bendkowski, Antoni Mikołajczyk, Janusz Połom, and Ryszard Waśko. As pioneers of video art in Poland and structural cinema in Central and Eastern Europe, the artists refused classical narrative and traditional film media, working instead somewhere between cinematography and contemporary art.

This publication examines all aspects of WFF’s activity, from their films, photographic experiments, video art, and performative actions to their teaching work, which includes previously unexplored pedagogical contributions to the National Film School. Drawing on the private archives and oral testimonies of the WWF, Workshop of the Film Form attempts to provide a full account of the group’s history as well as a comprehensive survey of each member’s practice. The writers who were invited to respond to the WWF for this book provide insightful new readings of the group’s output and activities, contextualizing their work in the history of the prewar Polish avant-garde and the politics of experimental filmmaking in Poland under the rule of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR).

They were also said to induce auto-illumination, the participant’s body generating an intense light from within.
This edition of Dr. Otoman Zar-Adusht Ha’nish’s original instructions has been newly edited and illustrated by Ian Whittlesea with images of actor Ery Nzaramba demonstrating the postures and an in-depth essay by Pádraic E. Moore that explores the relationships between esoteric movements, their racial theories and early modernism's embrace and eventual dismissal of the occult, Mazdaznan and Itten.

MZIN NEWS: DRESSED IN BLACK — SPECTRUM AND LOTHAR REHER (PRECINCT)

Dressed in Black extends out of the exhibition A Shelf for Lothar, staged in 2016 at the 27th Brno Biennial of Graphic Design. The book reproduces 115 jackets from the Spektrum series, the work of German designer and artist Lothar Reher. 

Spektrum, published in East Berlin by Volk und Welt from 1968 to 1993, embodied the ideals of accessibility and inclusiveness epitomised by the wave of mid-twentieth century paperbacks, in their inherent simplicity and usability. And yet, despite its mass readership, the series’ dense monochrome imagery has an uneasy air of mystery, with often oblique relationship to the books’ contents.

Reher designed all but one of the series’ 279 titles, producing the photographic montages more or less single handedly. Recurring motifs such as skulls, faces, museological artefacts and spherical objects reveal a long-term visual grammar, with later books in the series often echoing back to earlier designs. These taxonomies formed the basis of the shelf display in Brno, and aim to gain insight into Reher’s distinctive interpretation of this considerable body of literature. 

Alongside actual size reproductions of the jackets, Dressed in Black features essays by Regine Ehleiter and Roland Früh which further elaborate on the transactions between book and exhibition formats.

MZIN RESTOCK: TIM BARBER — HIGHSCHOOL (NIEVES)

Tim Barber (Vancouver, 1979), a New York based photographer and curator, started the tinyvices.com site more than a year and a half ago as an accessible showcase for his own and other photographers' work. Recently the project has evolved into a globe-travelling exhibition of more than 60 artists, which works Barber has first showcased on his website that is now functioning as a community publication, an editorial project, an art gallery and archive.

Highschool is the first Nieves publication of Barber’s own photographs from his last few years at high-school in Amherst, Massachusetts, released in conjunction with the tinyvices.com show at colette. Tim Barber's photographs are simply straightforward, and naturally attract the eye of the viewer for their raw and detailed vision.

Over the last few years, Barber has collaborated with many illustrious magazines worldwide and he has also worked as Photo Editor for Vice Magazine from 2003 to 2005. Amongst his previous publications is the acclaimed A Pile of Shit Has a Thousand Eyes, which was released for his solo show at the journal gallery (New York) last year.

Neubau Forst Catalogue is the 432-page print catalogue of a digital collection of tree silhouettes and sculptures seen at different seasons. Working by hand, the Neubau designers digitally removed the trees from their original Berlin surroundings and thereby crafted a body of visual material whose scope, outstanding quality of detail and excellent image resolution sets it clearly apart from conventional tree libraries compiled with autotracing tools. The trees, which were systematically photographed in summer and winter over several years, assume a timeless validity through Neubau’s process of selection and are thus universally applicable for future visualizations.


From the existing stand-alone tree objects, which can be placed against both dark and light backgrounds of all kinds, Neubau has furthermore derived individual “tree modules”. These modules can be combined with the ready-to-use trees in an endless number of ways. Alongside detailed information about tree species, size, location, year of planting and file format, the catalogue contains also numerous
