Assignments in design education
Talking a Line for a Walk focuses on the use of language in design education through the lens of the assignment. Deriving from the exhibition of the same name, which was part of the International Bieannial of Graphic Design Brno 2014, the publication showcases a compilation of around three hundred contemporary and historical assignments ranging from the Renaissance up to the present day. Accompanied by an index of names and subjects, as well as an extensive bibliography, the book's numerous historical examples provide an overview of different approaches to graphicdesign teaching, making it a reference work for both educators and students. The collection will be framed y two essays that look at the assignment as a teaching tool and linguistic artefact, and reflect on the different educational ideologies that lie behind the formulations of assignments. Taking a Line for a Walk is the first installment of a trilogy of books on mode of design education.
