This book is the first attempt at evaluating the individual chapters in the story of post-war art, architecture, town planning and other examples of visual culture in Brno. It is at once a reaction to current reflections on socialist modernity in specialist circles, and a follow-on to the comprehensively researched era of interwar functionalism. Individual case studies address different facets of the topic (design work, experimental building projects, the creation of civic amenities and infrastructure, communist propaganda, and the deployment of fine art in public spaces and in architecture) across the entire period of state socialism, extending partially into the period of transformation.
